Seminar topic: “Test of Composite Scintillators Based on Lithium Glass”

Speaker: Ilia Zimin

Abstract:

Samples of composite scintillators consisting of NE 912 lithium glass fragments placed in a neutral matrix have been developed and manufactured. The samples were made with dimensions of Ø40 × 2 mm and lithium glass concentrations of 25, 30 and 35%. Epoxy and acrylic resins as well as silicone compound were used as a neutral matrix. The samples were tested as part of a scintillation detector on a beam of thermal neutrons and with a source of gamma quanta 60Co. The efficiency of thermal neutron detection and gamma sensitivity were determined in comparison with a homogeneous glass scintillator. The results obtained confirm the possibility of reducing the sensitivity of the detector to gamma quanta by two orders of magnitude due to a slight (50%) decrease in the neutron detection efficiency.
