Abstract:

The adsorption of a nonionic surfactant, polyoxyethylene-4-nonylphenyl ether, on porous and non-porous polymer substrates is studied. The results obtained are discussed and compared with previously published data on the adsorption of an anionic surfactant on same substrates. It is concluded that the behavior of anionic and nonionic surfactants in negatively charged pores of approximately 100 nm in radius differs strongly due to electrostatic co-ion exclusion, which plays a significant role only in the case of ionic species.
