AYSS seminar at JINR Scientists’ Club

Seminars

On 26 April 2023, at 4:00 PM, the Association of Young Scientists and Specialists of JINR invites you to the next seminar that will take place at the hall of the JINR Scientists’ Club (6, Joliot-Curie street, left side).

Marina Frontasyeva (Advisor to the Directorate of the Frank Laboratory of Neutron Physics) will make a report “About the United Nations programme “Atmospheric heavy metal deposition in Europe. Assessment based on analysis of moss-biomonitors”.

Marina Frontasyeva about the seminar, “One of the most important aspects in solving the problems of environmental protection and human health is the control of atmospheric air quality. Heavy metals are the most dangerous environmental pollutants. In most European countries, the need to study the consequences of their impact on the environment and human health has led to the creation of national and international programmes for biomonitoring atmospheric heavy metal deposition. Scientists collect data on heavy metal deposition and other toxic elements based on the analysis of moss-biomonitors, which serve as an analogue of aerosol filters. Under the auspices of the UN Commission on the Transboundary Transport of Atmospheric Deposition in Europe (UNECE ICP Vegetation), the Atlas of Atmospheric Deposition of Heavy Metals is published every 5 years. The report contains information on the contribution of the international team of the FLNP JINR Neutron Activation Analysis Sector to these Atlases since 1995. The study of atmospheric heavy metal deposition and other toxic elements in a number of the JINR Member States and non-participating countries (Armenia, Belarus, Bulgaria, Croatia, Greece, Georgia, Moldova, North Macedonia, Poland, Romania, Serbia, Slovakia, and Western Ukraine), including some territories of Central Russia (Moscow, Tula, Tver, Yaroslavl, Vladimir, Samara regions, as well as the Southern Urals and the North Caucasus (the Republic of Ichkeria, North Ossetia) made it possible to identify and assess the areas of these pollutants in the studied territories and compare them with the levels of similar pollution in Western Europe. Currently, the possibility of expanding this programme to the countries of Asia and the Pacific coast is being discussed.”

There will be a small coffee break at 4:00 PM, which precedes the seminar. The report will start at 4:15 PM.

If you are going to join the event of 26 April, please take part in the survey via the link not later than 4:00 PM 25 April.
