Cooperation with Brazil discussed at JINR

The meeting between JINR representatives and a Brazilian delegation confirmed the parties’ interest in cooperation in almost every area of basic and applied research according to the Seven-Year Plan for the Development of JINR in 2024 – 2030. The Brazilian delegation was headed by professor Marcia Barbosa, State Secretary for Policy and Strategic Programmes at the Brazilian Ministry of Science, Technology and Innovation (MCTI). It was noted that the BRICS countries have a potential to collaborate multilaterally at the Institute to enhance national science and technology and train highly skilled human resources. During the visit, guests toured the NICA Accelerator Complex and the IBR-2 Research Reactor.

At the meeting, Director of the Joint Institute, Academician of the Russian Academy of Sciences Grigory Trubnikov emphasised the long history of JINR collaboration with Brazil and other Latin American countries which established a solid foundation for the expansion of cooperation.

Reports by Grigory Trubnikov and Marcia Barbosa provided an overview of priority research directions and presented the major research infrastructure of JINR and Brazil.

Following a visit by the Brazilian delegation to the laboratories of the Institute and after getting acquainted with the scientific infrastructure of the NICA Accelerator Complex at the Laboratory of High Energy Physics and the IBR-2 Impulse Reactor and its spectrometer complex at the Laboratory of Neutron Physics, a round-table meeting took place.

The informal outcome of the detailed discussions and the entire visit was a greater understanding of both sides of the high potential for scientific cooperation as well as the available scientific and organizational forms for its practical implementation.
