First JINR Information Centre in Southern Hemisphere opens

News, 30 January 2024

Yesterday, on 29 January, JINR Director Grigory Trubnikov and iThemba LABS Director Makondelele Victor Tshivhase signed an agreement on the establishment of a JINR Information Centre at iThemba LABS, the national accelerator centre of the South African Republic.

The new Information Centre is aimed at both representing JINR and informing the country’s general public about the results of the Institute’s international research, including that conducted in collaboration with South African scientists. The JINR Information Centre is focused on providing career guidance and attracting young people to science. The IC at iThemba LABS will hold scientific and educational events such as virtual tours of the Institute’s basic facilities, lectures by Dubna scientists, and online laboratory exercises and workshops.

The Republic of South Africa is a longtime partner and the Associate Member of the Joint Institute for Nuclear Research. The history of this fruitful cooperation goes back nearly 20 years. The JINR Information Centre at iThemba LABS has the potential to establish new ties with institutions across Africa, as well as foster mutually beneficial scientific and educational cooperation among the partners of the Joint Institute.
