JNET included in the international computer network

In 1988 the next critical step for computerization of JINR since the establishment the institute’s network JINET (Joint Institute Network) in 1985, was made. JINET network became a subscriber of the international computer network through the packet communication center at the Moscow Soviet Scientific and Research Institute of Applied Automated Systems (VNIIPAS). In the early 90s, two satellite channels (one for Germany, and one for Italy) were created, which linked local network with the JINR international network of high energy physics (HEPNET) and the Internet, extending the capabilities of existing ground-based communication channel with the Internet.
The organization of a parallel JINET and associated high-speed ETHERNET network began in late 1980s. By the end of 1989, two VAX-8350 machines were put into operation on the cable of the new network in IVTA casing. In 1990, “high-speed” (up to 10 MB/s) ETHERNET went beyond the IVTA building, and covered half of the grounds of the Institute.
