“The Ballad of Narayama” (1983): The film depicts the life of the Japanese in the difficult pre-war period, when people in distant villages were simply dying of starvation. In order to survive, they get rid of the unnecessary, in their opinion, members of society. Such are considered to be newborn children and helpless old people who, when they reach a certain age, are carried to the top of Mount Narayama to die. In one of the mountain villages lives an elderly Orin, who is already getting ready for her final journey. In her 70s, the woman is still full of strength and will to live, but ancient tradition and her honour do not allow her to burden her children.
