“Opfergang” (1944): Albrecht Froben returns to Hamburg after three years of sailing in Japan. At the wish of his family, he is forced to marry Octavia, the daughter of his uncle. They live on the banks of the Elbe. Albrecht finds it hard to get used to this bourgeois life. Nearby lives Äls Flodéen, a woman from the north who leads a different lifestyle. Albrecht spends time with her. Soon Albrecht falls in love with Äls, but he does not notice that she is seriously ill.
