News, 07 July 2025

From 30 June to 4 July, Ulaanbaatar hosted the International School on Nuclear Methods and Applied Research in Environmental, Material and Life Sciences (NUMAR-Gobi 2025). The event aimed to engage young specialists in the areas of applied research conducted by JINR and its partners from Mongolia. The event was organized by the Joint Institute for Nuclear Research in cooperation with the Nuclear Energy Commission under the Government of Mongolia, the National University of Mongolia, and the Mongolian Academy of Sciences.

About 40 Mongolian undergraduates and postgraduates attended 16 lectures in three courses on life sciences, environmental sciences, and materials science. The lecturers were researchers of VBLHEP, DLNP, FLNP, FLNR, MLIT, and LRB at JINR, along with the Institute’s partner organizations from Mongolia.

JINR employees gave talks on the following topics:

  • applied studies at the NICA Complex (Aleksei Slivin),
  • the FLNP research infrastructure (Bagdaulet Mukhametuly),
  • the application of radiation biology in cancer therapy and space exploration (Aleksander Bugay),
  • the use of radiochemistry in nuclear medicine (Ayagoz Baimukhanova),
  • analytical methods in environmental research and nanotechnology (Inga Zinicovscaia),
  • nanostructuring polymers using ionising radiation (Uliana Pinaeva),
  • finite element calculations for nuclear physics problems (Alexander Gusev),
  • the modelling of biological effects of accelerated charged particles (Batmunkh Munkhbaatar).

On the first day of the school, on 30 June, participants and guests celebrated the 60th anniversary of the Sodnom Nuclear Research Centre. The centre’s Director, Byambazhav Munkhbat, discussed the establishment and achievements of this unit of the Mongolian National University. At the ceremony, co-authors from Mongolia, Academician Tugal Zhanlav, Balt Batgerel, and Vandandoo Ulziibayar received diplomas on the 2024 JINR prizes. These scientists won the third JINR prize in scientific, methodological, and scientific and technical works for their study entitled “Numerical methods and problem-oriented program complexes for solving some partial differential equations of physical processes and systems” as part of an international team. The study was conducted in cooperation with JINR researchers from China, Mongolia, and Vietnam.

The Institute’s scientists held an official meeting with the leadership of the National University of Mongolia, headed by Rector Bayanjargal Ochirkhuyag. President of the Mongolian Academy of Sciences Sodnomsambuu Demberel welcomed the delegation as well. Former JINR employees, Academicians Sodnom Enkhbat, Khavtgai Namsrai, and Deleg Sangaa attended the meeting. The JINR delegation visited the Institute of Physics and Technology and the Institute of Mathematics and Digital Technology of the Mongolian Academy of Sciences.

Secretary of the Nuclear Energy Commission under the Government of Mongolia Gun-Aajav Manlaijav and LRB JINR Director Aleksander Bugay, who headed the Institute’s delegation, gave a talk at the closing ceremony. They noted the importance of holding such events and developing ways to attract students to science and collaborative projects between JINR and research groups from Mongolia.

Participants received certificates of completion of the school by outstanding scientists from Mongolia and JINR.
