JINR Days in Bulgaria. A school on nuclear physics in Blagoevgrad

News, 22 May 2013

The 6th Students school on nuclear physics In Blagoevgrad organized by the Nuclear Regulatory Agency of Bulgaria, the Joint Institute for Nuclear Research and the BAS Institute for Nuclear Research and Nuclear Energy in cooperation with the South-West University "Neofit Rilski" was held on 14-16 May 2013 in the frames of the JINR days in Bulgaria. Leading JINR scientists presented course of lectures on the major directions of JINR activities and modern development of related fields on science. Forty graduate students of universities from Bulgaria, Romania, Macedonia and Greece, and Bulgarian high school physics teachers attended lectures of the School.

The School was held in the University Center "Bachinovo" of the South-West University situated 3 km from the centre of Blagoevgrad near the picturesque Bachinovo Park. The Students schools are held by JINR in Bulgaria at the initiative of Deputy Chairman of Nuclear Regulatory Agency Latchesar Kostov since 2008. The School’s became international since last year when students from Greece and Romania were invited. This year two students from Macedonia and Romania participated this School beside students from Sofia, Plovdiv and Blagoevgrad. Moreover, two Bulgarian high school physics teachers were invited to attend lectures of scientists from Dubna.

The programme of the School was opened by VBLHEP Director Professor V.D. Kekelidze, who successfully combined information about the history and the modern appearance of JINR with description of tasks of relativistic nuclear physics, for which VBLHEP created the accelerator-collider complex NICA and the Multi-Purpose Detector. Most of other courses were created on a similar principle – to present the current state of science and in some area, and speak about JINR possibilities of experimental studies on an affordable level for students.

Physics of condensed matter was a topic of a lecture of Professor A.V. Belushkin. A.S. Denikin and S.I. Sidorchuk presented issues and the status of research in FLNR. The Bose–Einstein condensate was a topic of a lecture of V.O. Nesterenko. I.V. Koshlan presented an animation about modern achievements of biophysics. Lectures of A.O. Sidorin and V.A. Mikhailov were devoted to accelerator physics with emphasis on the NICA project. D.V. Peshekhonov spoke about the status of spin physics and possibilities of experimental research in this filed. Good attendance and abundance of questions, some of which were quite professional, were the indicator of interest of the youth to our Institute.

After completion of the School an excursion to founded more than 1000 years ago Rilski manastir – the place of amazing beauty and spiritual atmosphere of the mountainous area of Bulgaria were held for lecturers of the School.
