News, 21 October 2025
On 13 October, representatives of JINR, the Egyptian Academy of Scientific Research and Technology (ASRT), and Egyptian scientific organizations participated in a round table as part of the Quantum Computing and Machine Learning (QCML) workshop in Cairo. The session focused on the implementation of the quantum computing development strategy in the Arab Republic of Egypt. The participants discussed the progress of research in the field, as well as prospects and opportunities for collaboration.
JINR was represented by Director of the Laboratory of Information Technologies Sergei Shmatov, MLIT Scientific Leader Vladimir Korenkov, MLIT Scientific Secretary Olga Derenovskaia, Plenipotentiary Representative of the Government of Georgia at JINR, Head of the MLIT JINR Department of Algebraic and Quantum Computation Arsen Khvedelidze, Director of the University Centre Dmitry Kamanin, and Deputy Head of the International Cooperation Department Elena Badawy. Supervisor of Specialised Research Councils Ahmed Gabr and Coordinator of Bilateral International Agreements Mona Shouman spoke on behalf of the ASRT. Among other participants were employees of Egyptian scientific organizations: Professor of Computer Science at Nile University Ahmed El-Mahdi, President of the Electronics Research Institute Sherine Muharram, and a member of the Information and Communications Technology Council Wael Badawy.
The parties exchanged information on significant research results in quantum computing in Egypt, JINR, Russia, where the Institute is based in, and partner organizations of the meeting participants.
The Egyptian delegation learned about the activities of the Joint Institute for Nuclear Research, including the administrative, scientific, innovation, and educational aspects. It was highlighted that as an international intergovernmental organization, JINR served as an effective platform for establishing international scientific contacts and can offer opportunities for establishing contacts with industrial companies.
The parties discussed potential ways of launching joint scientific projects. A key point was the need to appoint liaisons for further dialogue. The JINR representatives underlined the role of the Information Centre at ASRT as a consistent provider of details about JINR and a convenient entry point. The parties agreed that joint scientific and educational events could be an effective method of strengthening cooperation.
A practical step for enhancing joint work, as proposed by the Egyptian representatives, could be a discussion of participation in the JINR Expertise for Member States and Partner Countries (JEMS) training programme for leaders and specialists of Egyptian scientific organizations with the ASRT management.
