Dzhelepov Laboratory of Nuclear Problems: “Everything goes according to the plan”

News, 11 April 2018

On 9 April 2018, on the initiative of JINR Director V.A. Matveev, his meeting with the DLNP Directorate, represented by V.A. Bednyakov, D.V. Naumov, V.V. Glagolev and A.A. Kulkov, was held in the Dzhelepov Laboratory of Nuclear Problems. Acting JINR Vice-Director B.Yu. Sharkov also participated in the meeting. The guests got acquainted with the working layout of the Baikal Neutrino Telescope, a facility being developed by DLNP staff members A.N. Borodin and D.V. Fedoseev. The guests visited also the 4th DLNP building recently repaired and highly appreciated the quality of the completed repairs as well as got acquainted with new laboratories.

A.S. Zhemchugov presented the laboratory for development of the MicroMegas detectors that would be used for upgrade of the ATLAS detector at CERN as well as electronic board assembly line. Yu.A. Davydov jointly with his colleagues presented a new laboratory for testing detectors of the muon veto in frames of the “Neutrino platform CERN-FNAL” project. N.S. Azaryan reported on development of the laboratory of laser metrology. JINR Heads learned about progress of repair works on development of express workshops in DLNP that is underway in the basement of the main building.

The visit was continued in the office of DLNP Director. D.V. Naumov reported on progress of the Baikal GVD, DANSS, nuGEN and JUNO experiments. The progress of work on the construction of a conference hall in Bolshye Koty, the Irkutsk region, was also discussed in course of the visit. In this village, JINR has been holding its popular international School on Particle Physics and Astrophysics for two decades. The discussion of some significant issues of JINR and the Laboratory development was held.

The guests and participants of the meeting were shown the model of the Michelson laser interferometer, which illustrates the principle of original detection of gravitational waves by the modern LIGO and VIRGO facilities. The model was developed by a 10-grade student of the school #6 Andrei Naumov under the direction of A.N. Borodin and D.V. Fedoseev.

At the request of the newspaper, the visit was commented on by V.A. Bednyakov: “I think the parties are satisfied by the milestones of this almost 2,5-hour meeting. The JINR Directorate saw the present state of the reconstructed laboratory and offices in the 4th building of DLNP as well as the status of offices repair in the basement of the 36th DLNP building. I would like to highlight enthusiasm of staff members. After recent finish of repairs in the 4th building, the experimental laboratories already operate headed by departments of A.S. Zhemchugov and Yu.I. Davydov.

Moreover, the JINR Directorate was informed about the successful installation of the 3rd cluster of the DLNP leading project “Baikal-GVD” in the winter-spring expedition 2018. Moreover, in this expedition, the first two clusters were fully repaired. A new experience was gained that opened a possibility of bringing into operation minimum 2 clusters of this neutrino telescope per one season. Development of a set of programmes for track reconstruction and selection of signal events is progressing at a fast pace.

At the end of the meeting, V.A. Matveev and B.Yu. Sharkov paid the DLNP Directorate’s special attention to the need of a decent presentation of scientific results, especially those acquired in frames of the neutrino programmes, at international conferences.

The JINR Directorate also noted significant success and importance of the Yu.A. Budagov and M.V. Lyablin’s project on development of laser inclinometers that are in demand at LHC, in particular, for increase luminosity of the collider.

V.A. Bednyakov highlighted that everything goes according to the plan in DLNP, but the Laboratory’s staff is able to do more, faster and better.
