2019 is the International Year of the Periodic Table of Chemical Elements

2019 was proclaimed the International Year of the Periodic Table of Chemical Elements by the UN General Assembly. This large-scale event is dedicated to the 150th anniversary of discovery of the Periodic law of chemical elements made by outstanding Russian scientist D.I. Mendeleev.

The initiative to hold the International Year of the Periodic Table of Chemical Elements was introduced by the Russian Academy of Sciences, the “Mendeleev Russian Chemical Society”, the Ministry of Science and Higher Education of RF as well as Russian and foreign scientists. The initiative was supported by numerous countries and international organizations as well as more than 80 national academies of sciences and scientific communities, including the International Union of Pure and Applied Chemistry (IUPAC), the International Union of Pure and Applied Physics (IUPAP), the European Association for Chemical and Molecular Sciences (EuCheMS), the International Astronomical Union (IAU) and others.

The International Year of the Periodic Table of Chemical Elements will be held in several countries of the world headed by UNESCO. In the frames of the International Year, a large number of events is planned to be held: scientific conferences, thematical exhibitions, competitions for young scientists and etc.

On 29 December 2018, Prime Minister of the Russian Federation Dmitry Medvedev signed the order “On holding in 2019 the International Year of the Periodic Table of Chemical Elements” and became the head of the organizing committee. Heads of federal bodies of the executive branch of the government, departments and leading scientific organizations became members of the organizing committee.

A festive opening ceremony will be held on 29 January 2019 in France (Paris), in the UNESCO headquarters. The IYPT2019 opening ceremony in Russia will be held on 6 February 2019, in Moscow, and will be dedicated to the Day of Russian Science and birthday of Dmitry Ivanovich Mendeleev.

The all-Russian Science Festival NAUKA 0+ will be the official operator of the opening ceremony of the International Year of the Periodic Table of Chemical Elements in Moscow. The Mendeleev’s Periodic Table is announced to be the main theme of the Scientific Festival in 2019. The general partner of the International Year of the Periodic Table of Chemical Elements in Russia is the “Arts, science, and sports” Charity Foundation. In the frames of the International Year of the Periodic Table, more than 500 popular-science and educational events are planned in all Russian regions to attract school students, students and the youth to science and its achievements.

Holding in 2019 the International Year of the Periodic Table of Chemical Elements has a special importance for Russia. This event will contribute to international recognition of achievements of bright Russian scientist D.I. Mendeleev as well as strengthening of prestige and popularization of national science.
