Students & Educators

The development of JINR as a truly international scientific organization is based on a continuous flow-in of talented young people from its Member States. Many representatives of the JINR Member States, scientists and engineers, have been trained at JINR; therefore, the Institute can be considered a scientific school of excellence.

The important role of JINR as a source of scientific brainpower has been predetermined by its founding principles, as well as by scientific schools of eminent physicists, such as D.I.Blokhintsev, N.N.Bogolyubov, G.N.Flerov, I.M.Frank, H.Hulubei, L.Infeld, G.Nadzhakov, H.Niewodniczański , B.M.Pontecorvo, V.I.Veksler, etc.

JINR has always been a great place to start a successful career in science. Students and graduates from the JINR Member States have the opportunity to prepare graduate papers and PhD candidate theses at the scientific departments of the Institute, combining this work with studying at the basic departments of the leading universities of Russia or studying in accordance with individual education plans. Such format has a number of advantages, including the opportunity to participate in the frontline research conducted by the leading international collaborations; a wide range of specialties at the Institute; high competence of JINR specialists acting as students’ scientific supervisors; unique additional educational programmes. There are six dissertation councils functioning at JINR.

Every year various JINR-based educational programmes are attended by several hundreds of senior and junior students from numerous institutes and universities of Russia and other JINR Member States. The overall coordination and support to the Educational Programme of JINR is performed by its special unit – the University Centre (UC). If you want to learn more about the history of the Educational Programme of JINR and the opportunities provided by the Programme, please visit the website of UC.

Close links have been established between JINR and the leading technical universities of Russia, including the Moscow State University, National Research Nuclear University MEPhI, Moscow Institute of Physics and Technology, Kazan Federal University, and St. Petersburg State University. All these universities have JINR-based departments. At the initiative of the JINR Directorate and with the active support by the Moscow State University and the Moscow Region and Dubna Administration, in 1994 the International University of Dubna was established in the city. Students of its seven basic departments have the opportunity to start their academic careers in the laboratories of the Institute while still being undergraduates.

The University Centre of JINR develops and coordinates an integrated academic process for these departments in order to train highly qualified specialists for JINR and its Member States. For this purpose UC has attracted the leading researchers of the Institute to the educational activity, and assisted in the organization of scientific work of senior university students in the research teams of the Institute. Curricula of the university departments are complemented with special optional courses in accordance with the trends of scientific research at JINR as a basic research institute.

For students and postgraduates from JINR Member States UC organizes and runs the International Summer Student Practice. Its participants are selected on a competitive basis by the country sending students for the Practice at JINR. JINR UC also runs the Summer Student Programme. The application for participation in this Programme may be submitted by any senior university student from the Member States of the Institute. The Programme participants are selected by the specialists of the Institute on the basis of reference and motivation letters provided by the students.

In 2020, the JINR University Centre launched a new programme for students from all over the world. It is called INTEREST, an abbreviation of the English “INTErnational REmote Student Training”. The Programme allows students to get acquainted with the activities of the Institute and conduct research projects remotely.

The conceptual foundation of the existing programmes of the Institute development is the triad: science – education – innovations, which is also in line with the strategy of economic development of JINR Member States.
