News, 31 May 2018

The end of May 2018 in the Joint Institute for Nuclear Research was marked by two significant cultural events. On 23 May, the Universal Public Library of JINR held a festive evening dedicated to the 100th anniversary of Czechoslovakia, and on 25 May, a festive evening dedicated to the Day of Slavic Writing and Culture was held in the JINR Cultural Centre “Mir”.

The Library. 100 years of Czechoslovakia foundation

On 23 May, the 100th anniversary of Czechoslovakia foundation, birthday of the common home for the Czechs and the Slovaks, was celebrated in the JINR Universal Public Library. In spite of the fact that Czechoslovakia separated into two independent states on 1 January 1993, the relations between the two fraternal peoples did not change. They are still very close nations with the common history, they are good neighbors and it is reflected in a mutual interest in everything that happens to the neighbors.

The evening was opened by a presentation of the exhibition from the Czech House at the Embassy of the Czech Republic dedicated to foundation of Czechoslovakia in 1918. In the frames of traditional Days of Literature of JINR Member States organized by the Library, the book exhibition and, what deserves to be specially noted, the exhibition of rare editions of books by Jaroslav Hašek “The Good Soldier Švejk” of different years and in different languages were opened. The film by a Czech director Jirí Strach “Osmy” evoked a vivid interest among the audience. All participants enjoyed both spiritual food and delicious dishes of Czech national cuisine.

Cultural Centre “Mir”. The holiday of the Slavic peoples

On 25 May 2018, representatives of the JINR national groups gathered at the JINR Cultural Centre “Mir” to celebrate the Day of Slavic Writing and Culture.

This holiday is connected with the names of Saint equal-to-apostles Brothers Cyril and Methodius, educators, creators of the Cyrillic alphabet, first translators of liturgical books from Greek into Slavic. The alphabet got its name from the younger of the brothers, Cyril.
