Concert of the Woody Black 4 quartet

Culture

On 3 December 2018, at 7.00 PM, the Dubna symphony orchestra presents the concert of the quartet of Australian clarinet players WOODY BLACK 4. The concert will be held in the JINR Cultural Centre “Mir”.

Daniel Moser (bass clarinet), Leonhard Skorupa, (bass clarinet), Stephan Dickbauer (clarinet), Oscar Antoli (clarinet, bass clarinet).

Woody Black 4 was established by students of the University of Music and Performing Arts Vienna as a kind of experiment. However, it immediately turned out that not only jazz-improvisational basis is important for the band. The key element of Woody Black 4 is involvement of its participants in various music, from commercial-pop to radical-academic. The quartet today is not only the combination of similar voices of solo, the second voice, bass and percussion. Musicians, with the base in Vienna, managed to find the balanced, equal sound in which every single voice is appreciated and able to perform any of functions in the band, which are independent when it is needed for the artistic aim. Jazz? Not exactly. The four clarinet players (two Australians, a Spaniard, and an Italian) call their music “a movement to jazz”. They play only their original music (though they can demonstrate their versions of jazz classics as well). The band has two albums («Woody Black Four» of 2013 and «Curiosity» of 2017), performances all over the world (including Japan, for example), and great feedbacks of the media. Famous Mike Stern presenting a Prize of the New York Jazz Competition to them made a comprehensive comment: “A fantastic band, really fresh and special.”
