INTEREST, a new JINR programme for students

Education, 02 September 2020

In September 2020, the JINR University Centre will launch a new programme for students from all over the world. It is called INTEREST, an abbreviation of the English “INTErnational REmote Student Training”. The Programme will allow students to get acquainted with activities of the Institute and conduct research projects remotely, without leaving home.

The website interest.jinr.ru has become the information platform of the Programme. Students, as well as JINR employees willing to propose scientific and research projects for remote implementation, can already register on the website.

What prospects does this student Programme provide?

The Programme creates an opportunity to learn about major research fields of the Institute and its laboratories, establish useful contacts, find a supervisor for a research project, as well as to prove yourself in the process of work thus increasing chances to be selected for participation in full-time JINR training programmes, for example, in the Summer Student Programme. Moreover, activities conducted remotely in the frames of the Programme may become an excellent preparatory basis for future implementation of more large-scale projects.

How will it work?

Having acquainted with research themes, a student submits an application for the project interesting for them. It should be noted that the application should describe the educational path of the student and his specialized knowledge and skills in great detail. It should also include a motivational letter.

All applications are considered by supervisors who then decide whether to enrol a student or not based on their opportunities, needs and preferences.

Each stage of the Programme lasts for 4-6 weeks, which are called “waves”.

At the end of a wave, a student makes a written report on conducted work, which is then published on the website after being approved by the supervisor of the project.

How does INTEREST differ from the International Student Practice and the Summer Student Programme?

The Programme will differ from already existing training programmes and summer internships: firstly, it will become year-round; secondly, students from any country may take part in it; thirdly, participation in INTEREST does not jeopardize but even increases the student’s chances to come to Dubna for participation in full-time practice.
