Meeting of RAS Council on Heavy Ion Physics in Saint Petersburg

News, 30 June 2022

The meeting on Heavy Ion Physics will be held from 4 to 8 July on the basis of the Saint Petersburg Hotel. The event is organized as a thematic meeting of the RAS Council.

The meeting is dedicated to theoretical, experimental, and technological problems of using heavy ions to study the properties of atomic nuclei. Participants of the meeting will discuss results of research under a grant from the Ministry of Science and Higher Education of the Russian Federation “Superheavy nuclei and atoms: limits of masses of nuclei and boundaries of Mendeleev’s Periodic Table”. The Superheavy Element Factory (SHE Factory) in the Flerov Laboratory of Nuclear Reactions is one of the brightest works carried out in the frames of the grant. A significant part of the reports will discuss the topics of research conducted at it. In addition, participants of the meeting will consider issues related to the current work on the project of cooperation between Rosatom institutes and the Joint Institute for Nuclear Research in Dubna in the frames of the fourth federal project of the integrated programme for the development of atomic science and technology.

The presentation of the G. N. Flerov Prize will be a special part of the programme. It will be presented to three outstanding scientists, staff members of the V. G. Khlopin Radium Institute:

  • Alexander Rimsky-Korsakov (awarded to the widow Svetlana Rimskaya-Korsakova),
  • Leonid Pleskachevsky,
  • Sergey Khlebnikov.

The meeting is held in the year of the 65th anniversary of the Flerov Laboratory of Nuclear Reactions. FLNR JINR Scientific Leader, RAS Academician Yuri Tsolakovich Oganessian is the Chairman of the Council. He is an outstanding scientist, in whose honour the heaviest of the known chemical elements of the Mendeleev’s Periodic Table oganesson is named.

The programme of the meeting also includes reports on the JINR flagship project “NICA accelerator complex“, which is being built in the frames of the national project “Science and Universities”, the JINR Innovation Centre, as well as digital platforms and quantum computing for Institute’s research projects.

More than 230 new events of synthesis of superheavy nuclides were achieved at the SHE Factory from 2021 to early 2022. The parameters of the Factory made it possible to significantly expand the possibilities and increase the efficiency of conducting experiments not only on the study of nuclear physical and chemical properties of superheavy elements, but also in the field of synthesis of new elements of the Mendeleev’s Periodic Table.
