Recalling founders

28 May is a remarkable day in the history of the Joint Institute. On this day in 1907, Wang Ganchang was born, one of the JINR founders. Wang Ganchang is a prominent Chinese researcher in the fields of particle physics and thermonuclear synthesis, Academician of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, PhD, professor. From 1958 to 1960, he was a JINR Vice-Director.

Academician Wang Ganchang took an active part in the implementation of the nuclear programme of the People’s Republic of China and was one of the creators of the Chinese atomic weapons. He was an Honorary Doctor of the Moscow State University, the winner of the State Prize of China in science and for advances in science and technology. Professor Wang Ganchang co-authored the ‘antisigma-minus hyperon’ discovery made by scientists of JINR.
