JINR gets a new patent

Patents, 13 July 2018

The Licensing and Intellectual Property Department of JINR announces that on 3 July 2018, the Joint Institute for Nuclear Research received a patent for the invention “Method of slow removal of a beam of charged particles from a ring accelerator”. The author of the work is Dolbilov Gennadij Varlamovich.

JINR staff congratulates the author on receiving the patent for his invention!

More details about the invention

Invention relates to method for removal of particlesfrom ring accelerators and primarily from ring accelerators with a constant magnetic field and a practically constant radius. For removal of particles, the reflection of particles by fields of permanent magnets is used, in which the angle of reflection is equal to the angle of incidence and does not depend on the velocity (energy and momentum) of the particles, depth of penetration of particles in a field with induction Bz depends on the momentum (energy) of the particles and is related by P(1-cosα)=q 0YmBzdy=qBz,cpYm , where:

Р – is the total momentum of the particles,
Pcosα – is the component of the momentum along the y axis,
Bz and Bz,cp – induction and average induction of the field of the magnet,
q – particle charge,
Ym – depth of penetration of particles in the field of a magnet.

In the case of elastic reflection, the reflection angle is always equal to the angle of incidence and does not depend on the velocity (energy) of the particles, and the depth of penetration of the particlesin the field depends on their energy. If the depth of penetration of particles in the field is smaller than the transverse dimension of the dipole, the particles are reflected and fall into another similar dipole and return to the equilibrium orbit of the accelerator. When, with increasing particle energy, the depth of their penetration in the dipole field becomes larger than the transverse dimension of the dipole, the particles pass through the dipole and are withdrawn from the accelerator.

EFFECT: possibility of automatic removal of charged particles provided they reach a given output energy
