During a meeting of the Presidium of the Russian Academy of Sciences (RAS) on 23 December 2025, the Academy members approved the list of the RAS professors elected at the General Meeting of the Academy of Sciences on 9 December. Deputy Director for Scientific Work of the Laboratory of Nuclear Reactions at JINR Alexander Vladimirovich Karpov was elected a RAS Professor in the Physics Division.

RAS Professor is an honorary title awarded to Russian researchers – doctors of sciences under 51 whose national or international achievements were recognised by the scientific community and who participate in the Academy’s main tasks and activities. In addition, the candidate for the title must have scientific papers published in high-impact journals and high bibliometric indicators. In addition, a potential professor of the Russian Academy of Sciences should give lectures and actively participate in employee training. Their students should have dissertations defended.

According to JINR Scientific Leader, RAS Academician Victor Anatolievich Matveev, three quotas were allocated for the nuclear physics section of the RAS Physics Division. Among the 12 applicants were four JINR scientists. “Members of expert commitees, and then members of RAS divisions, discuss the candidates in detail, which is a very important step towards getting to know the best representatives of our science in different institutes. Members of the Academy of Sciences are selected from the RAS Professors, because a very serious analysis of the candidates put forward by the institutes is carried out,” the JINR Scientific Leader noted.

At the division’s meeting, a JINR candidate, Deputy Director for Scientific Work of the Laboratory of Nuclear Reactions Alexander Karpov, was unanimously recommended for election as a RAS professor at the General Meeting of the Academy of Sciences. As a result of the General Meeting members voting, this honorary title was awarded to Alexander Karpov. “We congratulate Alexander Vladimirovich and are proud that he was chosen. He takes a great part in the work of the Academy as the scientific secretary of the RAS Scientific Council on Relativistic Nuclear Physics and Heavy Ion Physics, which makes him a prospective potential RAS member,” Victor Matveev concluded.
