Culture

We are glad to inform you that the Frank Laboratory of Neutron Physics invites to the festive opening ceremony of the monument to I. M. Frank and F. L. Shapiro. The ceremony will take place on 22 September at 3:00 PM.

The ceremonial opening will be held in Dubna, at the DLNP JINR Site, the FLNP main entrance, F. L. Shapiro Alley.

Ilya Mikhailovich Frank was a laureate of the Nobel and state prizes, organizer and longstanding Head of the Laboratory of Neutron Physics of the Joint Institute for Nuclear Research. Fyodor Lvovich Shapiro was a soviet physicist, corresponding member of the USSR Academy of Sciences, professor, FLNP JINR Deputy Director. I. M. Frank used to repeat that he was only a director and the whole “science” in the Laboratory was in charge of F. L. Shapiro. Shapiro’s ideas underlay the majority of investigations carried out in the Laboratory, not because he was of higher rank, but because among all suggested ideas his idea used to be the best. It was a great piece of luck that such two people as I. M. Frank and F. L. Shapiro met and successfully supplemented each other.
