Day of German Unity

Organization, 03 October 2022

3 October marks the Day of German Unity, a national holiday of Germany – an Associate Member of the Joint Institute for Nuclear Research.

The German Democratic Republic was among 11 founding countries of JINR in 1956. During the Soviet period, JINR established strong cooperation with scientific centres of both GDR and the Federal Republic of Germany. In August 1990, GDR ended its membership at the Institute. However, on 15 July 1991, the Joint Institute of Nuclear Research and the Federal Ministry of Education and Research (BMBF) of Germany concluded a bilateral agreement on cooperation and use of JINR facilities. Sessions of the Joint Coordination Committee on the Agreement fulfillment are held annually, participants of which consider joint projects within the scientific programmes of the Institute and their funding.

In 2022, German scientists are involved in 34 topics of the Topical Plan for JINR Research and International Cooperation.

Germany was a co-organizer of the V International Conference “Modern problems of genetics, radiobiology, radioecology, and evolution” held from 5 to 9 October 2021 in Nor-Amberd, Armenia. On 15 – 16 September 2021, JINR hosted the International Round Table on Applied Research and Innovations at NICA. Director of the Biophysics Department of the GSI Helmholtz Centre Marco Durante moderated one of the scientific sessions of the event.

On 26 March 2021, Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of the Federal Republic of Germany to the Russian Federation Géza Andreas von Geyr visited the Joint Institute for Nuclear Research. On 7 – 9 November 2021, JINR Director Grigory Trubnikov took part in the international forum Falling Walls in Berlin and had a number of working meetings with some key scientific leaders, including Scientific Managing Director of the GSI Helmholtz Centre for Heavy Ion Research Paolo Giubellino, Chairman of the DESY Board of Directors Helmut Dosch, Federal Minister of Education and Research of Germany Anja Karliczek, and Ambassador of the Russian Federation to the German Federal Republic Sergey Nechaev.

The Directorate of the Institute congratulates German colleagues on the Day of German Unity and wishes them and their loved ones good health and well-being, successful work, scientific achievements and discoveries for the benefit of science and progress!
