JINR will hold CP session in Egypt

On 23 – 24 November 2022, a meeting of the Committee of Plenipotentiaries (CP) of the Governments of the Member States of the international intergovernmental research organization the Joint Institute for Nuclear Research (JINR) will be held in Hurghada (Egypt). Egypt has been chosen as the venue for the session of the JINR supreme governing body to commemorate a year since the status of the Arab Republic of Egypt in the Joint Institute raised up to a full-fledged JINR Member State.

JINR is one of the largest international scientific organizations. Over more than 66 years of its history, JINR has gained a unique experience of integrating the efforts of dozens of countries to create a large research infrastructure for scientific studies in the fields of fundamental physics of particles, atomic nuclei, condensed matter, radiation research in life sciences. The Institute’s integration experience plays a significant role in training the highly qualified staff for the Member States. According to the principles of openness and inclusiveness, emphasised once again by the Plenipotentiary Representatives of the JINR Member States in the Sofia Declaration “On the value of international integration in science and technology” at the CP session in November 2021, the JINR’s mission is also to initiate and support cooperation between hundreds of scientific organizations and universities of the Member States and JINR partners in multidisciplinary fundamental and applied research for sustainable development. Full membership at JINR opens up qualitatively new broad opportunities for Egypt to build human capacity in natural sciences and related technologies. It provides access to advanced research infrastructure and promotes the development of scientific cooperation between Egypt and leading research centres around the world.

Participants of the CP session will consider scientific results achieved by JINR during the year. In particular, the progress in the implementation of the NICA international megascience project and the Baikal-GVD Neutrino Telescope will be presented, the status of work and the results achieved at the Superheavy Element Factory will be reported. Participants of the session will also discuss scientific plans for the upcoming year. President of the Academy of Scientific Research and Technology of Egypt, Plenipotentiary Representative of the Government of the Arab Republic of Egypt in JINR Mahmoud Sakr will deliver a scientific report.

For the first time, the Seven-Year Plan for the Development of JINR for 2024-2030 will be presented to the Committee of Plenipotentiaries, which will be adopted next year.

Members of the Committee will consider the milestones of the meeting and the recommendations of the Finance Committee, which will be held on the eve of the CP session. The CP will set the budget of the Joint Institute for 2023. New members of the JINR Scientific Council will be introduced at the CP session in Hurghada.
