On 30 – 31 May 2019, the Joint Institute for Nuclear Research will hold the International Symposium “The present and the future of the Periodic Table of Chemical Elements” in Dubna.

The Symposium is organized by the Flerov Laboratory of Nuclear Reactions JINR in the frames of celebrations of the International Year of the Periodic Table of Chemical Elements. The event is dedicated to the 150th anniversary of the discovery of the periodic law and the development of the periodic table of chemical elements by a Russian scientist Dmitry Mendeleev.

A festive opening ceremony of the Symposium will be held at 2:00 PM in the JINR Cultural Centre “Mir” where JINR Director Academician Victor Matveev will deliver a welcoming speech. UNESCO Assistant Director General, Head of the Sector of Natural Sciences Dr. Shamila Nair-Bedouelle, ex-president of the International Union of Pure and Applied Chemistry (IUPAC) Prof. Natalia Tarasova, and President Designate of the International Union of Pure and Applied Physics (IUPAP), Member of the JINR Scientific Council Prof. Michel Spiro will also welcome participants of the Symposium.

Director of the D.I. Mendeleev Museum and Archives Prof. Igor Dmitriev will deliver a lecture “D. I. Mendeleev: the way to the system”. Vice-Director of the London Royal Society, Prof. Sir Martin Poliakoff will deliver a lecture “Mendeleev’s Gift to Education”.

In the frames of the event, awarding of the Flerov Prize to laureates for their significant contribution to the study of the properties of exotic nuclei, as well as awarding of the special Flerov prize for high-school students, winners of the Olympiads in physics and chemistry, will be held.

At the end of the evening, a concert of the Russian National Orchestra headed by the founder, artistic director and chief conductor Mikhail Pletnev will be held for participants of the Symposium.

On the second day, the Symposium will be continued in the FLNR Conference Hall. After a welcoming speech by FLNR Scientific Leader, Academician Yu. Ts. Oganessian, participants of the event will visit the Superheavy Element Factory that has been launched this year accompanied by FLNR Chief Engeneer Georgy Gulbekian and Head of sector Vladimir Utenkov. The Symposium will be continued with a set of short reports on study and synthesis of superheavy elements presented by leading specialists in this field.
